Porcelain & Ceramic Crowns
If your tooth is damaged beyond what a filling can repair, a crown (also called a cap) can be used to cover the damage and rebuild that part of your tooth. A crown protects your tooth from further damage. You may need a crown if:
- You have had a root canal
- You have more filling than tooth structure
- You have a broken or fractured tooth
- Your tooth is badly stained, not the right shape or out of alignment
Crowns can be made of different kinds of metals, all porcelain, porcelain fused to metal and full gold crowns. They are strong and can last many, many years, if you take good care of them. Brush and floss your crown just like you clean your natural teeth. You can get recurrent or new decay on the base of the tooth below the crown if not cleaned properly.
But crowns are not unbreakable and can fracture. To keep your crowns in good shape, the following is recommended:
- Do not bite down on hard objects
- Do not use your teeth to open bottles or cut things
- Wear a protective mouthpiece if you grind or clench your teeth also known as (Occlusal Guard). These need to be fitted to your teeth
Depending on the type of crown Dr. Kats and you choose will depend on what condition your existing teeth are in, the type of crowns if any you already have, whether you have partial dentures, your time constraints, and what your preference will be.
You will need to come back in approximately 2 ½ weeks and the assistant will remove your temporary crown, clean the area and try in your new crown. If the fit is perfect Dr. Kats will then seat your permanent crown.
